Guatapé Tour

Relax with lush green hills and fresh water lakes

The Guatapé Tour takes you to lush green hills, fresh water lakes and El Peñon (The Stone); an enormous rock thought to be a meteorite.

The Guatapé Tour is for people who want an invigorating but relaxing day in the countryside.

Explore the picturesque village of Guatapé with its pastel colored houses. Scale the 200+ meter high El Peñon de Guatapé via a staircase of 644 steps. Take a relaxing boat trip on the Embalse El Peñol, one of the country’s largest lakes with a seemingly endless scattering of little islands.

The picturesque village of Guatapé is known as the Pueblo de Zócalos because of the beautiful pastel coloured paintings found on the lower half of nearly every building in the town´s historic center.

Guatapé’s most famous attraction is the 200+ meter high rock, thought to be a meteorite, that towers over the surrounding area. It’s official name is El Peñon de Guatapé, but it’s more commonly referred to as La Piedra (The Stone). Over 644 stairs have been built into the side of this enormous stone, allowing safe access to the top, where a viewpoint offers spectacular views of the lake and surrounding areas.

Popular boat tours on the beautiful Embalse El Peñol – an enourmous lake created by the construction of a hydroelectric dam that provides 30% of Colombia’s electricity supply – include a visit to the former site of Viejo Peñol, now underwater and marked by a giant memorial cross, a trip to see La Manuela, Pablo Escobar´s now bombed-out lakeside mansion, the Casa Museo, a museum housed in the only building left standing from Viejo Peñol and ‘Fantasy Island’, a pretty refuge in the middle of the reservoir, which has a swimming area, cabañas for rent, beautiful views of La Piedra and a pair of friendly resident scarlet macaws.
