Metro de Medellín is more than just a transport system.

First conceived as a possibility in 1979, with construction finally beginning in 1985, the Metro de Medellín finally opened in 1995.

Whilst there is still room for significant expansion, the Metro de Medellín is an excellent example of a modern day transport system that is air conditioned, clean, friendly, safe, cheap and with trains running every 3 minutes in peak hours, very efficient.

The Metro de Medellín is seen as a force for good in Medellín and has won the hearts and minds of its users through cultural activities – including, public lending libraries installed at stations known as Bibliometros – while another scheme, Palabras Rodantes (Rolling Words) has installed dispensers allowing people to take free copies of small, beautifully-printed books with short stories and extracts from novels.

The trains operate at ground level, except for some areas in El Centro where they are higher up on viaducts. Either way, the Metro de Medellín provides some great views of Medellín and its iconic emerald green hills in the background.

To travel from one end to the other on the main line (Line A) takes 36 minutes.
