Every Sunday in Parque Bolivar, following evening mass at the Metropolitan Cathedral, up to 300 people wait in anticipation for, La Dany the transvestite.
La Dany’s vulgar and spontaneous show has a loose format, which she often abandons to interact with and insult the eager audience.
During her improvised monologue, La Dany fights with her ‘mother’ – a ragged yellow giraffe – gives birth to three dolls – pulls a raw chicken out from under her dress – and chucks it into the crowd – before asking who wants to be its godmother.
Since she was kicked out of home at the age of 15 for sleeping with a married man, La Dany has been shot in the face, had her teeth knocked out in a traffic accident, been kidnapped, been in direct conflict with the police and the Roman Catholic Church and been given poisoned popcorn by an unknown person after one of her shows.
However, in recent years, La Dany has started to receive the attention she deserves for over 20 years of contributing to Medellín’s performing arts. And when two Canadian film makers made a documentary about her chaotic and sometimes tragic life she became a household name who now has her own facebook page.
La Dany recently stated that her greatest wish of all, is to have a statue of herself in Medellín’s historically important Parque Bolivar.
