Festival Internacional de Tango en Medellín immerses the city in melancholy as tango dancers, academics and fans from all over the world celebrate together.
The festival includes competitions, conferences, theatre, cinema, art exhibitions, handcrafts fairs and, of course, lots of tango.
Medellín’s spiritual connection with tango goes back as far as 1913 when tango was first broadcast by local radio stations and became immensely popular.
The special bond became unbreakable in 1935 when tango legend Carlos Gardel was killed in a plane crash on the runway of Medellín’s Enrique Olaya Herrera Airport.
Festival Internacional de Tango en Medellín (International Tango Festival of Medellín) is essentially a recognition of this historical relationship which now reaches across multiple generations.
Be sure to check out the nostalgic Casa Museo Gardeliana, El Patio del Tango and Salón Málaga as well as other modern venues, including public libraries and plazas, which take part in the festival each year.
