Feria Taurina de la Candelaria is Medellín’s official annual bulfighting event.
Whether watching an animal being slowly jabbed to death is justifiable and whether the brave matadors would take to the stage if that animal hadn’t already been drugged and wounded has been debated and doubted many times over.
But, while this cruel and barbaric festival is difficult to justify, observing bullfighting’s devoted fans and their eccentric melodrama in the stands may be a valid cultural attraction.
Indeed, these cronies may soon become an endangered species themselves, so now may be the last chance to gain insight into their beastly form of entertainment.
The Macarena stadium or ‘Plaza de los Toros’ in Medellín happens to be the only roofed bullring in South America, which hopefully means it is still of some use when the madness finally comes to an end.
