Whilst one should be weary of claims of gourmet sophistication in Medellín, most Colombians would agree that El Corral’s hamburgers stand out among other fast food chains.
El Corral continues to maintain numerous fast food outlets, while its gourmet restaurants now serve hamburgers with an array of sophisticated toppings, including imported cheese, tahini, Argentinian sausage and stir-fried vegetables.
The meat itself is also said to taste better because Colombian cows are far more likely to be found roaming the green highlands and sniffing the fresh mountainous air than most chemically concocted cows in the westernised world.
This positive impression still exists, despite the fact that El Corral has for so long been the victim of rumours surrounding the origins of its hamburgers and whether they did, or still do, contain worms. The rumours have become so pervasive that many Colombians will swear blind that this is the main reason for the hamburgers being so tasty.
Rumours aside, the boring reality is that you can’t buy hamburgers made from worms in El Corral, at least not in the ‘gourmet’ restaurants.
