Edificio Inteligente EPM is a truly immense building both inside and out.
The intelligent building is home to EPM (Empresas Públicas de Medellín) who serve Medellín’s energy needs.
The building is deemed intelligent predominantly by virtue of its design as opposed to the incorporation of intelligent gadgets controlling every aspect of its inner workings. For example, it has its own castle-like water moat both to prevent unwanted intruders from entering and to absorb hot debris in the event of an explosion.
Due to its vastness, Edificio Inteligente EPM can feel empty, despite housing some 5,000 employees. Made from concrete, metal and glass it can also feel a bit like being inside a giant spaceship and you might start to fantasise about Darleks appearing in the corridors or the entire building going into orbit.
The building has no internal walls throughout its immense structure and, as a result, there are some incredible views of its main central light-well. You can also see panoramic views of the whole of Medellín from one of the building’s large terraces.
Though it’s not the only intelligent building in Medellín, it seems Edificio Inteligente EPM has struck a chord with the people of Medellín. Indeed, if you get hungry, you can visit ‘las empanadas inteligentes de San Juan’ across the street.
